Nordman Design is a furniture and lighting design studio and workshop run by Mac Nordman.

It combines furniture making, prototyping, batch production and commercial props and model making for the film and theatre industry, with other ‘odd’ stuff made to order.

He attended Art school in Sweden after which he accepted a position at Newcastle University to complete a Bachelor degree in Industrial Design.

On completion of his Industrial Design degree, a chance meeting with the head of a film props department, lead him to a job working on a film in the model making and props department.

This activated a new passion for sculpture and model making.

Since then, Mac has continued working in this industry, now over a decade. It is always satisfying seeing the completed films with elements of his work dotted through them. There have been a number of films and TV series over time now, some attracting a large following at the box office so, many people would see Mac’s work without necessarily relating it to Mac.

In between films, Mac completed a two-year apprenticeship with a Swedish furniture maker in Sydney, who had quite an impact on him. The best lessons learnt during this time, involved how to technically break down a design and incorporate fastener-free joinery techniques.

Recently, Mac has had opportunity while working on two feature films, to work as furniture maker in the art/ props department making custom furniture specifically for those productions. Viking ship furniture for Thor love and thunder, among the missions.

Between productions, Mac has worked on his ’personal’ design projects for Nordman Design where he makes furniture and lighting. At times, he has worked wth Interior Designers and Art Directors making custom pieces of furniture. Mac has entered various competitions including Workshopped, in Australia and the A’Design Awards in Milan, Italy.

Mac’s chief passion in furniture design is in the making of new pieces; getting in to the workshop and deciding which materials to use; considering how they will come together and examining the interrelationships of form and function.

Tinkering with the lines and forms and seeing how the shapes and elements merge and interact are important aspects in the development of Mac’s designs.

In the final stages of design, Mac centres his focus on the overall form and function of the piece, a fundamental in the design process.
